My Life Choices

It all started like this.

I just finished my three years of formation in youth and adult correctional intervention in college Ahuntsic. Now, I have to make a choice
Choice 1: Go to McGill University.
Choice 2 ; Go to another country to do humanitarian aid.

Scene 1.

It’s my first year in McGill University, I met a lot of new friends and I love it but it’s too expensive for me.

Choice 1: I got another job to pay the school
Choice 2:I drop out of school to save some money

Scene 2.

I got two jobs and finally I could pay my semester, but now I have some issues with my friends .

Choice 1: I decide to ignore them and continue with semester.
Choice 2: I go to a party and meet some new friends.

Scene 3.

After hard work, I finally got my degree and I am working like criminologist in the United states.

Scene 4 .

Those friends are so fun, I love them but now my grades are decreasing.

Choice 1: I keep partying with them, school is not that important.
Choice 2: Maybe, I should concentrate on my exams and school.

Scene 5.

I failed all my exams and I'm so depressed, I need to catch up in school !

I got all my final exams and my degree , now I could work in my field of study.

Scene 7.

I work full time, but my salary does not help me so I became a drug dealer. Now I need help.

Scene 8.

I went to Brazil for humanitarian aid , I love this country.

Choice 1: Should I stay here and help those in need ?

Choice 2: Should I go back to Montreal to work in a youth center?

Scene 9.

I married a Brazilien guy and we lived a happy life.

Summary of Social Workers

I’m a student from Ahuntsic College, I’m actually in youth and adult correctional intervention program, which is to support supervise and help some people with a deviant behavior whether youth or adult. In Canada, especially in Montreal QC, when you get your diploma from this program you can choose to work with kids in youth center or with adult in jail and many other places. Studying for youth and adult correctional intervention can also be closely related to social worker, both have the same bases.

The work of those people is to support people in need, in moral and physical types of ways. They help people with a lot of variety of problems, related to human right, for example. Everyone can help others but the difference is that for social workers they get paid for something valuable for everyone. They refer their clients in many organizations, but it’s important to the client to trust their social worker otherwise those families in need lose interest to get helped. In fact, over 1/3 of those families decided not to attend to their appointments. Sometimes those cases can cause a big loss of energy for the social worker creating a bigger investment from them and not from the clients. Social workers want to help all the problems of these individuals at the same time, that create a high level of stress they have to resolved their problems one step at the time.

In general, social workers need to have a Bachelor’s degree or something equivalent to social science. The higher you want to get in this job, the higher education is required. The most important fact to become a social worker, is to have a good approach with individual and a good knowledge of sociology.

For those new social workers, they are more likely to get a successful job because they are hired to implement the programs services and they are several programs available to help their clients. They are creating new jobs by working outside of rural sectors. The fact that they got a good training from college and experience in social field give them better job opportunities. Which makes the job harder is that the Government make a lot of cut reducing accessibility to programs for the clients.

When they first started they can love or get to stress out by this job, some workers get to emotional and quit their job after some years of exhausting work because they want to help a lot of people but it’s unrealistic. For those who stay in this field tend to get more specialize and will be upgraded by the years having more people in theirs case load and having more responsibility in this job.

THE CACTUS MONTREAL

Cactus Montreal is a community organization, created in 1989, it was the first center of needle exchange program in North America. This organization prevents the community to blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections. They work with injected and inhaling drug users, sex workers and trans people. They began by an outreaching work with injecting drug users and sex workers. They created a program for trans people. They educate, prevent and assist each person with those kinds of issues, they even distribute patrols of drug consumption sterile material, condoms, etc.

This community organization is located in downtown Montreal, so accessible to everyone, the mission of this organization is to "promote their health, their well-being and their inclusion in society ". They use a pragmatic and humanistic approach, in other words the participant have the power to change things in his life by participating in the community organization activities.

In youth and correctional intervention, it is important to know a lot of youth center or community organization like this one because you need to orientate a lot of people with a different kind of problems.
